
The Embassy of the Republic of Burundi to the United Republic of Tanzania proudly hosted a vibrant celebration marking the 63rd Anniversary of Burundi’s Independence at the Residence of the Ambassador in Dar es Salaam on 9 July 2025. Organized by Embassy staff in close collaboration with members of the Burundian Diaspora, the event brought together a distinguished audience for an evening of joy, cultural pride, and renewed friendship.
Among the honored guests were senior officials from the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania, members of the diplomatic corps, representatives of international organizations, and members of the Burundian community residing in Tanzania. The celebration not only showcased Burundians’ pride in their national heritage but also highlighted the enduring cooperation and goodwill shared between Burundi and Tanzania.
A Showcase of Culture and Strengthened Friendship
The evening featured a rich display of Burundian culture and tradition. Guests were captivated by the performance of the Burundian cultural troupe « Intatana », whose dynamic drumming and elegant dances illustrated the rhythm, artistry, and spirit of Burundi. The performance, met with enthusiastic applause, served as a powerful reminder of the country’s deep-rooted cultural identity and unity.
The venue, adorned in the colors of the Burundian flag, radiated warmth and patriotism. The cultural exhibition also fostered a shared appreciation and strengthened connections among attendees.
Ambassador’s Remarks: Honoring Independence and Strengthening Relations
In her welcoming remarks, H.E. Leontine Nzeyimana, Ambassador of the Republic of Burundi to the United Republic of Tanzania, expressed heartfelt gratitude to all guests for joining the celebration.
“It is a great honor and privilege to stand before you this evening as we commemorate sixty-three years since Burundi gained her independence,” she said. “Your presence highlights the strong friendship that we proudly share.”
The Ambassador extended special appreciation to Hon. Dennis Lazaro Londo (MP), Deputy Minister for East African Community Affairs of the United Republic of Tanzania, for gracing the occasion. She conveyed, through him, Burundi’s sincere appreciation to the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania—under the leadership of Her Excellency Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan—for its continued partnership and hospitality toward the people of Burundi.
Ambassador Nzeyimana also commended the collaboration of Embassy staff and the Burundian Diaspora in organizing the event, emphasizing that the celebration symbolized not only national independence but also unity, resilience, and shared progress.
A Celebration of Cooperation
In her address, the Ambassador highlighted the longstanding and brotherly relations between Burundi and Tanzania, built on mutual respect and solidarity since the establishment of diplomatic ties in the 1960s. Over the decades, the two nations have deepened collaboration across key sectors, including trade, transport, education, culture, and peacebuilding.
She paid special tribute to Tanzania’s historical support for Burundi—particularly its role in hosting Burundian refugees and facilitating peace dialogues that contributed to national stability. Ambassador Nzeyimana reaffirmed Burundi’s commitment to further strengthening bilateral relations for the mutual benefit of both peoples.
“The cooperation between Burundi and Tanzania continues to grow stronger,” she said. “Together, we are building a future of shared prosperity and development.”
Remarks by Hon. Dennis Lazaro Londo (MP) and the Toast to Independence
Hon. Dennis Lazaro Londo (MP), Deputy Minister for East African Community Affairs, expressed great honor in representing the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania on this joyous occasion. He conveyed warm congratulations from Her Excellency Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, President of the United Republic of Tanzania, to His Excellency Évariste Ndayishimiye, President of the Republic of Burundi, and to the people of Burundi.
Hon. Londo commended Burundi’s achievements in peace consolidation, economic transformation, and regional cooperation, noting that such progress contributes significantly to the East African Community’s shared vision of prosperity and unity.
He concluded his remarks by inviting all guests to join him in a toast:
