A total of 127 members of the Burundian diaspora representing the regions of Dodoma, Singida, Manyara, and Morogoro gathered in Dodoma on Saturday, 27 June 2026, to assess progress made in diaspora organization and agree on priorities for the 2026–2027 period.
The meeting was chaired by Mr. Anthère Rwasa, Chargé d’Affaires ai of the Embassy of the Republic of Burundi in the United Republic of Tanzania, on behalf of the Ambassador. It brought together members of the Burundian community as part of the Embassy’s continued outreach efforts to strengthen engagement and cooperation with Burundian communities across Tanzania.
Participants reviewed progress achieved since the establishment of the current diaspora leadership in October 2025. Key achievements included initiating the process of opening a bank account for the Burundian diaspora in Tanzania, supporting the return of Burundian nationals who had been stranded due to documentation challenges, participating in activities organized by Burundi’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission (CVR), and contributing to international diaspora initiatives.
The meeting also identified key priorities for the coming period, including finalizing the diaspora bank account, establishing a solidarity fund to support diaspora activities, introducing a diaspora membership card, assessing diaspora investment opportunities in Burundi, and expanding efforts to identify and register Burundian communities throughout Tanzania.
Chargé d’Affaires’ Remarks: Diaspora as a Partner in National Development
Addressing participants, Mr. Anthère Rwasa, Chargé d’Affaires ai of the Embassy of Burundi in Tanzania, commended the diaspora’s commitment to unity, solidarity, and mutual support. He encouraged Burundians living abroad to contribute to the country’s socio-economic transformation through investment, knowledge sharing, entrepreneurship, and professional networks.
He emphasized that the achievement of Burundi’s vision of becoming an emerging economy by 2040 and a developed country by 2060 requires the contribution of all Burundians, including those in the diaspora. He noted that collective efforts, whether large or small, can generate meaningful and lasting impact.
Drawing inspiration from the Burundian proverb “Isorosoro rirwira iyo riroye,” which highlights the power of collective effort, he encouraged diaspora members to recognize the value of individual contributions and to actively participate in Burundi’s development journey.

The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment by the Burundian diaspora and the Embassy to further strengthen collaboration, promote investment opportunities, and support initiatives that contribute to Burundi’s long-term development aspirations. The engagement demonstrated the important role of the diaspora as a strategic partner in advancing national development and strengthening Burundi’s presence and image abroad.
